Spain Accelerates Crypto Market Transformation After the Full Implementation of MiCA

Madrid, September 16, 2026 — Spain’s cryptocurrency market has entered a new regulatory phase following the end of the transitional period established under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Since July 1, 2026, crypto-asset service providers operating in Spain must hold the required authorization to continue providing regulated services.
The transition marks an important step in the development of Spain’s digital-asset ecosystem, as crypto exchanges, custodians, and other service providers move from the previous national framework toward a harmonized European regulatory environment.
Spain Moves Beyond the MiCA Transition Period
MiCA established a common regulatory framework for crypto-assets and crypto-asset service providers across the European Union. In Spain, providers that were already operating before December 30, 2024, could benefit from a transitional regime allowing them to continue their activities until July 1, 2026, or until their authorization was granted or refused, whichever came first.
The Spanish National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) confirmed that the transitional period ended on June 30, 2026. From that point, only providers holding the required authorization are permitted to operate in Spain under the MiCA framework.
The change represents a significant shift for the Spanish crypto industry, placing regulatory authorization and compliance at the center of market participation.
What Changes for Crypto Service Providers?
Under MiCA, companies providing crypto-asset services in the European Union must meet specific requirements concerning authorization, governance, operations, consumer protection, and risk management.
The CNMV explains that crypto-asset service providers must either obtain authorization under MiCA or fall within certain categories of already regulated financial institutions that are authorized to provide crypto-asset services.
For companies that did not obtain the necessary authorization before the end of the transition period, continuing to provide regulated crypto services in Spain is no longer permitted.
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) also called on unauthorized crypto-asset service providers approaching the end of the transitional period to wind down their activities in an orderly manner while protecting client interests.
A New Regulatory Environment for Spanish Crypto Users
For users, the new framework brings greater importance to the regulatory status of the companies they use for buying, selling, custody, and other crypto-related services.
The CNMV has advised investors to avoid conducting business with entities that have not completed the required authorization process, noting that such entities would no longer fall under the supervisory and investor-protection framework established by MiCA.
The regulator has also highlighted the importance of checking the authorization status of service providers through the relevant public registers.
This makes regulatory transparency an increasingly important consideration for Spanish users as the local crypto market becomes more closely integrated with the European framework.
From National Registration to European Authorization
Before the full implementation of MiCA, Spain operated a national registration system for certain virtual-asset services, particularly services involving the exchange of virtual currency for fiat currency and the custody of electronic wallets.
Under the new framework, authorization under MiCA becomes the central regulatory mechanism for crypto-asset service providers.
This transition reflects a broader transformation taking place across the European crypto market: digital-asset businesses are increasingly operating within regulatory structures that resemble those applied to other parts of the financial sector.
For companies, this means greater emphasis on compliance, governance, risk controls, custody arrangements, and transparency. For users, it creates a clearer framework for identifying providers operating within the regulated European market.
Spain’s Crypto Market Enters a More Structured Phase
The end of the transitional period does not mark the end of crypto innovation in Spain. Instead, it creates a new environment in which technological development and regulatory compliance increasingly need to operate together.
The Spanish market continues to see regulatory attention beyond MiCA. In September 2026, the CNMV announced a collaboration with Autocontrol aimed at promoting responsible financial advertising and investor protection, highlighting the broader focus on how financial products and services are communicated to consumers.
Meanwhile, the CNMV continues to publish warnings regarding unregistered entities, demonstrating the importance of verifying the regulatory status of companies offering financial and crypto-related services in Spain.
Connecting Crypto Innovation With the Real Economy
The development of Spain’s crypto regulatory framework comes as blockchain technology continues to expand beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading.
Digital assets are increasingly connected to areas such as payments, financial infrastructure, tokenization, digital custody, and cross-border transactions.
For businesses operating in or entering the Spanish market, understanding this regulatory environment is becoming an essential part of participating in the digital-asset economy.
The transition to MiCA therefore represents more than a regulatory change. It is part of a broader shift toward an ecosystem where crypto, blockchain, payments, financial services, and regulatory compliance increasingly intersect.
As Spain enters this new phase, the connection between technological innovation and the real economy becomes increasingly important — creating new opportunities for businesses and users to explore digital assets within a more structured European framework.
